Is Made in Abyss Season 2 Set After the Movie? plot

Made in Abyss Season 2, The Golden City of the Scorching Sunwill continue the story from the end of the third movie, Dawn of the Deep Soulwhich was released in 2020.

While this is classed as the second season of the series, it’s actually the third part of the story as presented through the anime. The first season was followed by two compilation films and a third movie that continued the story from the end of the anime.

Made in Abyss Season 2 will continue from the end of that third movie, following the group in The Capital of the Unreturned.

Made in Abyss Season 2 Release Date

Made in Abyss Season 2 is set to premiere in July 2022 as part of the Summer anime season.

We don’t know any further details regarding the series’s release as of yet. The title is licensed by Sentai Filmworks, owners of HIDIVE, and has been reported by Anime News Network as set to release “in digital and home video”.

If the above is true, then Made in Abyss Season 2 might not be broadcast on terrestrial TV like most anime. That would give it more options regarding episode count, individual episode lengths and release dates and times.

If any more information is revealed, we’ll update this page.

Made in Abyss Season 2 COUNTDOWN

Until we hear more information regarding a specific release date, we can’t provide a countdown for Made in Abyss Season 2. Rest assured, though, that we’ll update this page as soon as the news is announced!

Where to Watch Made in Abyss Season 2

Nothing has been confirmed regarding where Made in Abyss Season 2 will air. However, international viewers will likely need to stream the series on either HIDIVE or Amazon Prime.

The relatively-small streaming service HIDIVE is owned by Sentai Filmworks and most of its catalog is made of their shows. Made in Abyss is licensed by Sentai, and that’s where you can currently find the first season in most regions.

HIDIVE does offer a simulcast service similar to Crunchyroll, with Sentai-licensed anime such as Ya Boy Kongming and The Executioner and His Way of Life being released weekly during the Spring 22 season.

While most regions can watch Made in Abyss on HIDIVE, Season 1 does remain on Amazon Prime in North America. The platform does not tend to pick up new titles, though.

With Made in Abyss being one of the most anticipated anime this summer, if Amazon doesn’t choose to air it, you would expect another platform like HIDIVE to pick up the slack.

There is no word on whether the series will air on Crunchyroll. However, considering that it has not shown any of the series up to this point, suddenly appearing on the popular streaming platform would be a surprise.

What Studio is Producing Made in Abyss Season 2?

While not explicitly confirmed, it’s expected that Made in Abyss Season 2 will be produced by Kinema Citrus, who worked on the movies and season 1.

All the key staff from the first season and the latest movie are returning for the second season.

The new series will be directed by Masayuki Kojima, in his first directorial role since the movie aired two years ago. Hideyuki Kurata is once again handling script composition, having recently performed the same role for Goblin Slayer and Girls’ Frontline.

Made in Abyss Season 2’s opening theme will be performed by Riko Azuna, who recently performed the ending theme to Trapped in a Dating Sim. The outro, meanwhile, will feature MYTH & ROID, who performed the ending in the first two seasons of overlord.
